Processed
Glass Aggregate
Every year, recyclers collect and process
thousands of tons of container glass for use in the manufacture
of new glass containers. During the process some of the
glass becomes broken, colors are mixed or otherwise contaminated
and cannot be used in container manufacturing.
There is another option to capture a higher
amount of material from recycling programs where recyclers
are developing alternative markets for glass, including
applications for recycled glass as a construction aggregate.
Because of the high demand in the glass
recycling markets for clean, color separated glass, the
economics of sorting and transportation can be substantial
thus realizing the cost savings of glass aggregate applications.
This provides the municipal recycling programs additional
opportunities to reduce a portion of the waste stream that
typically ends up in the landfill as regular solid waste.
Municipalities may now add other types of glass to the recycling
programs such as: stemware, mugs, plates, cups, ceramics,
PYREX, glasses, and vases.
The use of recycled glass as a high performance
substitute for sand and aggregates have been studied and
proven to work ideally in applications of construction.
For example, with excellent drainage and
permeability, glass aggregate can be used for:
Aggregate for gravel road base
Backfill for foundations
Backfill for walls
Drainage pipe bedding
Rigid Pipe bedding
Drainage blanket
Sloping material
Foundation material
The State of New Hampshire was the first
in the Nation to adopt specifications allowing crushed glass
as an aggregate and the NHDOT specifications are available
here. (link) The State of NH is also experimenting with glass
in other areas of construction.
Turnkey Recycling and Environmental Enterprises
in Rochester NH now offers processed glass aggregate as
an alternative material to: construction companies, Road
Agents and Public Works Departments for use as an aggregate
to road base materials or culvert and pipe bedding.
Waste Management of New Hampshire, Inc.-
Rochester is the first Solid Waste Management Company in
the State of New Hampshire to provide this collection service
extending our relationships to the communities we service.
